About Us

The Story
Pop Vulture began in the autumn of 2025 in a small studio in Oxford filled with stacks of old magazines and a shelf groaning under the weight of vinyl LPs. But the story really started in late‑1980s Manchester, when a wide‑eyed 16‑year‑old blagged his way into the Haçienda on a shoddily faked NUS card and felt the world burst wide open.
I’m Dominic Utton, and Pop Vulture is the long echo of everything that moment set in motion. I grew up in Manchester, a city where music isn't just entertainment, it's identity. A place where a single lyric can change the way you walk, talk, dress, or dream.
As a teenager I lived for that music, that identity. That passion carried me into music journalism, and 25 years of chasing stories, interviewing heroes, and trying to capture that feeling in print. From the Sunday Times to Grazia USA, from broadsheets to tabloids, magazines and countless websites, from tiny fanzines to the editor’s chair at the digitally reborn (and inevitably doomed) Q Magazine. I’ve interviewed everyone from Liam Gallagher to S Club 7, from Dave Grohl to Johnny Rotten, from Shaun Ryder to the Pet Shop Boys. I’ve sat with Tony Wilson among half-forgotten Factory demo tapes, spent an evening at Abbey Road with Suede, flown to Paris for the launch of a Simon Cowell girlband that vanished as quickly as it arrived, and danced through Ibiza with Radio 1 and the Ministry of Sound.
The Music That Made Me
And through it all, everything came back to the music that made me. The Haçienda, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Acid House, 808 State, Inspiral Carpets, James, Paris Angels, The Charlatans… this was the soundtrack of my youth, and its style and swagger have stayed with me ever since. It’s shaped the words I've written, the bands I’ve played in, the Indie Discos I still DJ. And now it shapes Pop Vulture.
